His father and grandfather were both senior partners at Panmure Gordon. His great great grandfather Emile Levita was the director of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China which became Standard Chartered Bank in 1969. Aged thirteen he went on to Eton College and just before he was due to sit his O'levels he was nearly expelled when he was named as having smoked cannabis. It was only because he admitted the offence and was not involved in selling drugs that he was not expelled.
He left Eton in 1984 and before going to Oxford university he worked as a researcher for Conservative MP Tim Rathbone and was then employed by Jardine Matheson in Hong Kong. Returning from Hong Kong he visited Moscow where he met a friend they traveled to Yalta on the Black sea coast where two Russians speaking perfect English began talking to them, took them to dinner and asked them about politics and life in England. Cameron was later told by an Oxford professor that it was an attempt by the KGB to recruit him.
